Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach STEAM electives to middle schoolers in an under-resourced and underfunded school which also boasts a free and/or reduced-price lunch participation of 100%. My school's population is very diverse, a mini-United Nations of sorts, with students hailing from many countries and speaking a variety of different languages. What they all share is a thirst for learning about technology.
My students are amazingly diverse, hard-working, and enthusiastic about learning STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics).
The kids have many obstacles that they face in their daily lives, but once they enter my class, they are spirited, driven, and ready to wow me with their curiosity and ingenuity. They constantly impress me with their creativity and talents!
My Project
Integrating art into my Gateway to Technology classes has been crucial in recruiting and retaining female students into my elective classes. For whatever reason, the word on the street was that only nerdy males take my classes but I'm hoping to change that misconception.
Learning technology is empowering and by having these graphics tablets in my class, the students will learn how to draw digitally.
Using an optical mouse to draw in digital drawing programs is tricky. With these tablets in hand, the students will create their own background images and sprites for games that they will then learn to program. The goal is that ALL of my students will see that learning to create something is better than passively consuming something.
This is the 3rd and final project to help me get a 1:1 student to device ratio in my class. If this is funded, every student will be able to draw digitally any time they want as we learn remotely without having to wait to check out a device and arrange pick up or drop off for distance learning. Right now, my school is starting off with remote learning so we are in the process of distributing "kits" to students of materials that they will need to do the work that I'm assigning in my class at home. The students are not keeping the materials but are checking them out just like their computers and textbooks. I had one project funded already but that means the students will have to check out the tablets and and wait their turn. My goal is to get enough tablets so every child in my class could check out a tablet to use during remote learning. Thank you for your support.
