Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are amazing and resilient. Many are immigrants or from immigrant families. Many are affected by being homeless and neighborhood violence, but come to school every day ready to learn. In a neighborhood where violence is an everyday part of life, school becomes so much more than just a place to learn. The students in my classroom recognize the value of an education as a means to a positive future and, hopefully someday, a safer community as well.
Our students are English language learners in an urban neighborhood.
School is their safe haven and a place where they can focus on a positive future. They are eager to learn and take pride in the investment of others in their education.
My Project
I have several students who are struggling with key math concepts. Standard base 10 blocks do not help students to truly visualize how each place value makes up the next place value. Digi-Blocks let students see how numbers on a place value chart are truly related. They then become an even more magical resource for visualizing and understanding regrouping and division concepts. I have a handful of students this year who really need a resource that allows them to manipulate and demonstrate the concepts of division. Digi-Blocks will really drive home the concepts and give them the scaffolding they need to be successful in math!
