My Students

I have a group of 26 energetic second graders. All of them are well on their way to becoming independent readers. It is wonderful watching them learn to love books and reading!

My students come from many backgrounds.

We live in central Kentucky. Some live and work on the surrounding farms. Others come from the "knobs" around us. Some are the children of doctors at the hospital or professors at the local college. However, they are like most second graders. They enjoy video games and Spongebob. Many say recess is their favorite subject.

My Project

We love digging through our dictionaries in order to find new words. We write the definitions and make up sentences using our words. Then we have fun trying to use them when we talk or write. Our current dictionaries are getting a little old (1979) and worn. Pages are torn and pictures are dated.

A new class set of dictionaries will be a nice addition to our room.

The dictionary I've chosen is highly rated. It is simple enough for second graders to use and the wonderful illustrations make it interesting. I've already seen my students get excited about learning new words and building their vocabularies. These new dictionaries will help that excitement about language continue.
