Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A day in Mrs. S's classroom is no ordinary day. It is a melting pot of cultures and languages which encourages the expression of individuality. We are a Title l school with a high number of English Language Learners. Students come to school with a wide variety of different learning abilities; they are from a rural area and low socioeconomic backgrounds, though they come to school ready and eager to learn.
I teach a large number of students for whom English is not their first language.
One of my goals is to increase their English language proficiency to help them succeed in school and in life. In turn, I hope to aid their family advance and succeed in society. In our classroom, we use a mixture of flexible grouping to promote academic language use-- where students are encouraged to voice different opinions and justify their thinking.
My Project
My students are seven and eight years old. While some students may have already begun to bloom into wonderful young readers, others require a more in depth reading program. The same old drills often become rote and boring to our children--they need something exciting and more hands-on with vocabulary and reading fluency.
It's a sad day when a child claims that reading is sooo boring!
How can they fall in love with content that is so unexciting?
The solution is a program called Rooted in Reading. This summer I purchased a reading curriculum that focuses all foundational reading skills around a different picture book each week. I have worked hard all summer preparing the resources in the program. I need the requested books, like Library Lion, Old Elm Speaks, and Koala Lou to implement our exciting new reading program. I can't wait to get started and witness the joy these stories bring to my students!
