My school is in a high poverty area, where the hands-on materials and equipment needed to encourage students to explore and experiment are not always available. My kindergartners get excited when I pull out manipulatives.
My students are kinesthetic learners, so they need to experience hands-on exploration for them to learn and be able to later apply their new knowledge.
They come up with questions, and I guide them so that they can encounter new discoveries. My school is very supportive in encouraging exploration/investigations in the classroom but has limited financial resources necessary for new materials.
My Project
This year we added a large gravel pit to our kindergarten garden area. The kids can dig and scoop and pour and measure.
My students love learning outside and these diggers will help us make our outdoor learning space even more exciting.
We want to tap into the interests of the students so the learning really sticks. These scooping machines will also strengthen hand and eye coordination and develop finger dexterity that will benefit them as they learn to hold and use writing tools. A majority of our students land in job fields requiring hands-on, active work and this is a great way to highlight and encourage those skills even at an early age.
