Ms. Davenport from Charlotte NC is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 25 subscriptions to Scholastic News and Science Spin so that they will be able to learn about current events while improving their reading.

Did you get classroom magazines as a student? I remember how excited we all were each time the magazines arrived. I want my students to experience that excitement each month! My students need new and engaging text to get excited about reading.
I teach fifth grade students at a Title I school in North Carolina.
The majority of our students will begin the school year reading below grade level. Reading isn't their favorite subject because it forces them to face their reality: they struggle with it! My dream for all of my students is for them to be proficient readers, not only in science, but in all of their core classes by the end of the year.
This project would provide my students with a class subscription to Scholastic News Magazine along with Spin Science Magazine. As a child, I loved reading these magazines, and I would love to share it with my students. Along with the physical magazines comes access to the online resources through Scholastic Magazine. My struggling readers could listen to audio versions of the articles. There are videos to engage students before reading articles. These magazines would be used as whole group lessons and also for my students to read during independent reading.
This project is important because the only way to get better at reading is by reading.
My students need a lot of encouragement to get started reading. Scholastic News magazines appeal to my students because they love learning about current events in science. I know that having these magazines would result in my students getting excited about reading!
