Help me give my students the hands-on opportunity of digging through stone and sand to discover the "find of a life time" (or older) with the discovery of an ancient fossil from the deepest layers of the earth.
This year, I am enjoying forty-four, fourth grade students in a new departmentalized teaching structure in our school district. Our district has restructured to create sister schools, integrating students from all socioeconomic backgrounds as well as multiple ethnic backgrounds. I am teaching STEM, with many ideas for my students to intrigue, engage and succeed with the NGSS standards.
Well, I've been immersed in STEAM and Math lessons with forty-four amazing young children for over two months now and having the time of a life time.
We are ready to dive into more STEAM projects to continue to grow our understanding of the sciences around us.
My Project
By turning the tides of learning, we'll offer the children a hands-on archeological dig to launch questions about their finds. With essential questions pondering, students will then conduct investigations into topics related to their fossils with the discovery of so much more.
After identifying their fossil from the chart, students will engage in research of the landscaping and location of the fossil, time frame of the Earth's history and will branch into the changes in the Earth over time.
An arrowhead will surprisingly be discovered as well, lending investigations to then branch off into curiosities of the indigenous people of our land.
Students will be expected to share their information about their finds in an archeological report sharing some factual information as well as some opinion creating a theory. As a bonus, a geode for their breaking would be awarded. History, a little surprise amongst our sand.
