Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a Title I school which is located in East Los Angeles. Most, if not all of my students, are from Hispanic backgrounds. I feel very fortunate to have been able to come back to the school that I once attended as a child. I can honestly say that I love my job. I enjoy teaching. I love the fact that I can speak and teach in my native language.
My students are all eager and determined learners who have challenged themselves to be in a rigorous Dual Language Program.
I teach all subject areas both in English and Spanish. Although it can be challenging at times, I manage to find resources and the time to plan both in English and in Spanish, to alternate the language in the subject areas throughout the day. I have to create resources in both languages because I might need one resource in English one week but need the same resource in Spanish the following week. I am very proud of my students for committing to such a demanding program. My students know that being bi-literate is the key to opening more doors of opportunities for a successful future.
My Project
Learning from home had been very challenging for most students. Its very hard to sit behind a computer and try to stay focused all day when you are at home with multiple distractions in the background.
Giving a volleyball to my students will allow them to get up and move.
During our Physical education time, I would love for them to go outside and practice some volleyball skills that will be new to them. At school, I would see how they would create new ways to play with a volleyball and the net, but never the correct way of playing volleyball. Although I am no Pro at this sport, every year I would dedicate time into teaching my students how to play it correctly. This year, although we are at home, I think it is still possible to teach them some of these skills: serving, spiking, blocking, digging and setting.
