My students need organized, differentiation resources, such as headphones for individualized learning experiences and shelves for easy access to cooperative learning materials.
My students reflect the diversity of Oakland. In the same class period, I have students whose families have just immigrated to America, and students whose families have never left the area. Some of my students speak only English, whereas other students speak Spanish, Cantonese, or Arabic. Similarly, my students have unique interests and abilities. I teach nearly all of the 6th graders in my school, and each student has their own learning style and needs in the classroom. While studying "A Course for Teaching English Learners" and reflecting on my class procedures, I became inspired to make my classroom set-up more interactive and accessible for all of my learners.
My classroom needs basic resources to provide meaningful, differentiated learning experiences tailored to the needs of each individual student.
My students would benefit from having organized shelving for classroom supplies that would encourage group work and reflection, such as different colored pens and poster paper. Additionally, my students who struggle with reading would benefit from tools, such as earphones, so that they can listen to text. I would love to set up interactive learning centers within my classroom, but would need more organizational tools to facilitate this process.
My Project
Many of my students are struggling readers. Having headphones will allow students to have text read aloud to them by online software. Additionally, it will allow all my students to be able to complete individualized tasks on the Chromebooks without disrupting others. Currently, there is no resource center in my classroom where students can easily access basic materials for activities. Having good shelving will reduce time wasted in finding materials, strengthen classroom routines and procedures, and improve student learning. Basic class materials, like different colored pens, will allow students to cooperate on problems in their own colors, give feedback on each others' homework, and reflect on their own learning.
The resources from this project will make it easier for every student in my classroom to choose their own path in their own education.
By providing these basic resources, I hope that all of my learners will have their needs met and become fantastic scientists. Thank you in advance for your help in improving student outcomes!
