This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My incoming group of second graders is an active group of kiddos who come from various cultural backgrounds, life experiences, and learning styles.
This group of students is diverse, unique, and are enthusiastic about learning.
Several of my students will need explicit and targeted instruction in the area of phonics as they are on READ plans. About half of my students are learning English as a second language. I have a few students with IEPs and will do a lot of differentiation in my classroom this year.
My Project
In my classroom this year, I am hoping to fully implement flexible seating. Flexible seating will provide my active students with an opportunity to choose which seating arrangement is best for his/her individual learning style.
Since second graders can often be fidgety or restless while sitting in hard and uncomfortable chairs, flexible seating will give my students a chance to spread out during work time, fully engage in their learning, and be comfortable at the same time.
Higher student engagement equals more learning.
With flexible seating also comes a lesson in responsibility for my students. Students will learn how to make appropriate choices in regards to seating and behavior, which will make them more successful in the classroom. I am hoping to add items such as balance ball chairs, wobble chairs, fidget bands, and scoop seats to my classroom for flexible seating.
