Differentiated Learning in the ELAR/ELL Classroom With Ms. Thomas
Help me give my students a family engagement language pack and language arts games that will assist them in their second language acquisition, both at school and at home.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am second-year teacher working in 6th-8th grade Resource Reading and English Language Arts. The scholars that I instruct are severely below grade level in both reading and writing. Also, I have recently been assigned newcomer students who received a very limited education in their home country and speak little to no English.
My English language learners are so excited to have been placed in my classroom.
They have so much zeal to learn. I am learning from them and vice versa. In addition, all of my scholars are diagnosed with various intellectual disabilities that impede their learning.
My Project
The family engagement language packs will help to reinforce the skills taught during the class day. Some of my ELL scholars had almost no education in their home country. They will be able to bring home packs to work alongside their parents, to further develop their skills in recognizing sight words, retelling simple stories, recognizing rhyming sounds, recognizing and counting syllables, identifying letters, learning beginning sounds, building vocabulary, recognizing opposites and building simple words. This will not only help the scholars in my classroom, it will also help to build an English language arts and reading foundation for the other family members in the home. They will return the next class day to review and I will reteach as necessary. Providing this daily routine will help to increase their reading comprehension and writing skills.
The additional ELAR games that I have requested will focus on other ELL and English speaking scholars with their English language development, reading comprehension skills, and writing skills.
This will assist all of the scholars in my 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classes in small group station rotations and also when they are showcasing their skills during our campus Family Literacy Nights.
