My students need four iPad minis and three headphone sets to be able to help translate text in science class and watch videos that support them with their own personalized learning.
"There is no elevator to success, you have to take the stairs."
My students come from very diverse backgrounds and are extremely hardworking.
What if you could help students reach their goals by giving them the technology and tools they need to succeed?
Roosevelt Middle School is one of the most diverse schools in Oakland.
We are located in the San Antonio District, east of Lake Merritt, and our demographics reflect those of our neighborhood, with approximately 35% Latino, 44% Asian, and 18% African American students. Many of our students have immigrated to the United States, and many more will be the first in their family to attend college. Approximately 40% of our students are English Language Learners, and 90% qualify for free or reduced lunch.
This is going to be my second year working with this cohort of students. I am amazed by the hard work that they put in on a daily basis. I have students who have recently immigrated to the United States. They are so grateful to be here and are working hard to be successful in everything they do. I also have students who could benefit from being able to explore more of their own interests and have the technology needed to push themselves to new heights.
My Project
The mini iPads with headphones will be available for my students to use on a daily basis. I have a group of newcomer students who could use the iPads to help them translate their readings and their classwork. The NGSS curriculum focuses on being able to collaborate and communicate with one another. My newcomer students will be able to use this technology to help translate and learn science concepts through videos as well. In order for them to be successful, they need to have the appropriate tools to access the curriculum.
I also plan to use this technology to help push my advanced students to new heights. I have students who have shown interest in certain science topics and various branches of science. However, our school is not well equipped with the technology for these students to further explore their interests. The mini iPads could be used as extension activities for students to conduct research, work on homework, and learn through Khan Academy as well as other online resources and simulations.
This donation will help my classroom out tremendously by allowing my students to have easy access to technology.
They will be able to translate documents easily in order to participate more in class. They demonstrate perseverance and resiliency on a daily basis. They should be able to have tools that could help them succeed in their academics.
This will also allow my other students to be able to conduct their own research and extend their thinking after our daily lessons.
