Do you remember being bored in class because the teacher didn't differentiate instruction? Wouldn't it be nice if we didn't all have to learn the same way and complete all activities the same way.
This year I was given a 2/3 combination class one week before school started.
I have 16 second graders and 12 third graders. I was not prepared for a combination class. My students are high independent learners and need to be challenged frequently. They finish activities very quickly. Most appear to be high achievers, whose parents of course would like them to qualify for our GATE program. They are well behaved students and usually go above and beyond classroom expectations. The students like working in groups and not always in textbooks.
My Project
My primary objective is for these students to be able to think "outside of the box." I want these students to learn to work together. Even though it's a long way off, I want these students to be successful in life by knowing how to solve difficult problems, think in a wide variety of ways, tackle problems with confidence, and apply these skills to all areas of life. Our students will learn that being successful will enable them to enter honors/advanced classes down the road. I'm having them use math because so much of math is associated with science and technology. These are areas where the U.S. is lacking compared to other countries. I'm asking for items with titles such as Gifted and Talented Gr. 3, Brain Teasers Logic Box, Math for the Gifted Student, BrainQuest Workbook, Instant Learning Centers, and other similar titles. We will use these ASAP. I would include the above during our daily workshop. Materials would also be used for homework. This will supplement daily work.
Because I was given this combination class one week before school started, I was not prepared with enough materials.
Most of what I received was thrown together last minute. It was decided by our principal that high independent learners would make up this class. If I'm able to receive materials it will truly make a difference for students!!! These are bright individuals who think "a mile a minute." They are like sponges who want more and more information. Please let these students excel.
