Ms. Walker from Decatur GA is requesting flexible seating through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students flexible seating choices that allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean, or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow, and core strength.

Children need to move. Flexible seating allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean, or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow, and core strength. In turn, this burns more calories and increases metabolism. It also helps keep young minds more alert and focused.
Just like educators create differentiated instruction to meet the needs of their students there is also differentiated seating.
Flexible seating is essentially “differentiated” seating. There are many different choices, some options giving children the sensory input that they need. Students are less disruptive and can burn off energy throughout the day. Flexible classrooms give students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them and help them to work collaboratively, communicate, and engage in critical thinking. It’s time to think outside of the box and adapt to our students energized bodies and meet them where there are instead of disciplining them for being their true selves. I will set clear expectations and create a system to make the option of choosing a seat fair and non-disruptive. You don’t have to make flexible seating available for every situation or every minute in the classroom.
The traditional desk and chair situation can lead to children feeling possessive over their ‘own space’. While this is great for responsibility (students need to keep their space tidy), flexible seating can lead to more of an essence of community. This will help students practice the concept of sharing and taking turns. This can also lead to the development of problem-solving skills, communication, and conflict resolution. Many of the flexible seating options available today provide children with an opportunity to stimulate their sense of touch. This will promote a higher level of thinking and information processing.
