I am an educational technology teacher in a very rural area of Appalachia, Ohio. Our elementary school houses Head Start programs, pre-school, kindergarten, first, second and third grade classrooms. We have a high percentage of low, social economic households and free lunch students.
Research literature throughout the past decade has shown that technology can enhance literacy development, impact language acquisition, provide greater access to information, support learning, motivate students, and enhance their self-esteem (ACT, 2004; CEO Forum, 2001; Boster et al., 2004; Mann et al., 1999; Tracey & Young, 2006; WestEd, 2002).
My goal is to use educational technology to engage my student in a variety of subject areas. This specific project is a STEM cart for all classroom teachers to share to incorporate: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in an interactive, engaging, hands-on method. The requested materials will make learning fun!!
My Project
My goal is to create a traveling STEM cart for K-3 students and teachers to access at anytime during the day to enhance, differentiate, and enrich student learning. My first attempt for this project was not funded, so I am trying again with a smaller cart to get my students access to STEM learning.
Some of the coolest items on the cart:
BooleanBox, which is computer kit that teaches kids to code! A 101 Piece Construction Engineering Wooden Block set for problem solving skills and basic engineering. RisingStar Interlocking straw building blocks to engineer and develop motor skills. Elementary level sewing kits with multi-step directions. And many other STEM (science|technology|engineering|math) based activities.
The items on this cart will be student choice and the students will often work in small group. For the majority of the projects they will be student lead, which will increase social skills and creative thinking. My goal is for a variety of students to be enriched with this manipulative each day and make them excited about learning! Long term, I would like to create a STEM cart per grade level and add new materials as needed to challenge my students.
