I am currently teaching at in an urban setting at an alternative school for students with behavioral needs grades 6-12. Many of the students who end up in an alternative settings have experienced adverse experiences including trauma and poverty. Often, students do not get access to necessary interventions that can reduce risk factors. As a result, many of my students have fallen significantly below grade level, and have low self esteem when it comes to school.
My students are without a doubt some of the most curious minds I have taught.
They are smart, loyal, and consistently make me challenge my own views.
My classroom has a very diverse population when it comes to ability levels, learning styles, and behavioral needs. This year, I have taken on an inquiry based model in science class to spark my students' curiosity by giving them ownership over their learning. Students build their own meaning of challenging concepts through hands-on discovery based labs, computer tasks, and demonstrations.
This type of learning is often digitally enhanced; however, unfortunately my school does not have a class sets of headphones.
Digital activities allow my students to interact with the material in ways they are interested in, and at a pace suited to their ability. Additionally, it teaches them computer literacy. Many of my students do not have access to computers or internet at home, so tech integration in the classroom is critical to their future success in today's society.
