My students need to see themselves (and others) in books, so this list is a collection of characters with special needs, characters of various nationalities, ages, and color. We want to want to read!
The young children entering our room are curious and eager to learn and grow. We ask questions. We tell stories. We make friends. We work diligently to grow as individuals and as a community and establish positive mindsets as we develop our habits for learning.
We are a good mix of personalities, cultures, and ethnicities- a very diverse community and family!
We learn from our teachers, and we learn so much from one another. Although we come from very diverse places and families, we have one goal: to learn and to grow so we can be the best version of ourselves.
We believe learning to read helps us to do just that. Our teacher does her best to get books into our hands, and she works hard to teach us strategies for reading like a superhero! We learn to appreciate the value of books and what they can do to help us learn and grow.
My Project
We work hard in our room to build relationships and community, and as we all come from very diverse places, it is very important that young children see themselves (and others) in and through books. Picture books such as "Last Stop on Market Street" and "We Are Family" and the many other books on our list will help us see ourselves and better understand those who are different from us.
Books are useful in connecting children to experiences they do not understand as well as connecting them to experiences they have already had.
Hopefully, making these connections through books will build a fascination and love for reading and help our young readers empathize with others.
