Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are second language learners from over 8 different nations. Most of my students speak Spanish as their first language and have been in the country for less than four years. About one third of my students are students with a disability. All of my students qualify for the free lunch program. They inspire me daily with their can do attitude and commitment to learning.
Reading is a challenge to them but they work hard and are making progress.
My Project
Many of my students are students with disabilities. Some are labeled "dually identified" meaning that they have a learning disability and are also second language learners. Many are immigrants who have left families to come to America. These books acknowledge differences while celebrating them.
The book "A Fish in a Tree" will speak to many of my students who struggle with reading because of dyslexia.
Tears came to my eyes when I discovered the text "Joey Pigza Swallowed a Key" because I have students who feel as though they can never quite do anything right. Help me help my students celebrate differences.
