it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Future scientists seeing the world! Our 7th grade science classroom is filled with excited students who want to experience science as never before. My school is an urban, high-poverty, high-need junior high school.
A large number of my students are from lower income/high poverty homes and, while needing glasses, they often don't have them. As you can see by the picture posted, students are forced to gather in a small area to see the TV that shows computer programs, PowerPoint, videos, microscopic specimens, etc.
Many of my students are excited about learning science and the exposure that they get from the visuals in my classroom helps to maintain that excitement and build on ideas and concepts for future learning. However, many of the students have a difficult time seeing them - even when they are somewhat close.
We need an LCD projector so that all students can see what is being presented in our classroom. If I can project the visuals on a large screen vs a 27" TV, I know more of my students will be able to see what is being covered and be able to apply the visuals to their learning. We will be able to see what it is we're learning about and still be able to work instead of fitting ourselves into a small area and then having to work our way back to our desks to continue working (only to repeat the process for the next slide, video clip, microscopic organism, etc). It will allow us to incorporate even more technology into our lessons so that all of the students can benefit.
Your support will enable all of my students to be able to participate in learning science; they will all have the opportunity to see and hear what is being taught. We will be able to have more learning experiences in class and we can be at our stations actively learning. I know I'll hear "did you see that?" over and over in my room as we use our LCD projector. That is what science is all about!
