I am a Third Grade Teacher at a suburban elementary school in Charlotte, NC. Currently 83% of my class recieves free or reduced priced lunch, 33% of my students speak English as their second language and 3 of those students have been in the US less than 8 months. For the 2005-2006 school year I expect to have 25 students. As 3rd graders my students are 8 to 10 years old. This is the perfect age to introduce them to world events. They are becoming interested in the world outside of our city. They hear and watch the evening news and we use local newspapers in the classroom whenever possible. I currently use Weekly Reader, a children's news magazine. Each week my students eagerly read about current events in a child friendly format. After reading and discussing the magazine they have an oppurtunity to practice their reading comprehension skills. I would like to continue using Weekly Reader with my students next year. Each week we use Weekly Reader to discuss current events. After reading the magazine the students answer reading comprehension questions on the back. There are also activities such as graphing, reading time lines and voacabulary practice. These activities provide real life practice for the skills they are learning. I would like to be able to continue to use this weekly news magazine with my students. I have seen first hand how it opens their eyes to the world around them and encourages well thought out conversations.
