Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are all English Learners that possess a strong desire to learn and great enthusiasm, too. They often face challenges in acclimating to a new environment while maintaining a healthy and secure sense of self. Many times my students have literacy skills in their native languages but struggle to find texts of interest to them in English that are also comprehensible. Other students of mine can communicate in English and may have been born in the U.S but have struggled, until a short time ago, to enjoy reading.
Over the course of my four years teaching, I have worked with the support of our DonorsChoose.org community to turn non-readers into readers through appealing graphic novels.
Students that struggled just a year ago to name a single book they enjoyed, are now regularly checking out books and can name many titles they have recently read. As my students continue to navigate their identities along with personal interests, these books help solidify their identities as readers.
People, like you, through DonorsChoose.org have helped me provide my students with texts that are engaging and interesting.
My Project
When my last DonorsChoose.org project was funded, I literally had a fifth grade student do a happy dance when he learned Amulet #8 (a series that hooked countless of my students and has had them on edge waiting for the next book to be released) would soon be entering my classroom. This is just one example of the sincere joy that I know this project will bring. Each and every title selected below has been deliberately picked keeping my students' interests in mind.
I once had a simple goal to share a love of reading with my students, but now my goal has evolved into a hope that I can continue sharing this love of reading in the years to come.
To that end, I have bought milk crates and collapsible bins to organize the books acquired, created take-home book bags using Ziploc bags and duct tape to help the books stay in good condition and created a book sign-out contract so that parents/students are aware of their responsibility as borrowers. I mention this to emphasize that these books are treasured and cared for immensely.
I continue to create these projects for my students whose eyes continue to light up when they realize they are THE first person to read the pages of the new book in their hands. The opportunity to read is one that my students take advantage of and one I cannot provide alone. I look to you, Donorschoose.org community, for help in ensuring that every eager reader who enters my classroom finds a book of interest and so that when they ask “Do you have the book yet?” I can affirm, “yes I do!”
