As a first grade teacher, SC standards state that I am to teach students to use a dictionary and a thesaurus. Dictionary and thesaurus skills are difficult to teach due to the few dictionaries and thesauruses available in my class. I have a few that are paperback and quite worn. Students would benefit more and have more hands on experience with these books if I had a class set of each. As of now, students have to take turns or share. A whole group lesson on dictionary and thesaurus usage is almost impossible. Students also use these reference books when writing and reading. I am requesting funding for a class set of 15 hardback dictionaries and hardback thesauruses that are age appropriate.
