The Oxford Picture Dictionary for English/Spanish is a work of art. The pictures are clean and clear, the sections are broken down into easily recognizable areas and it covers just about all areas of life and work. Each picture is numbered clearly, with English and Spanish neatly printed on the bottom of the page and then suggestions on how to practice using the words.
Our school is located in rural southeastern North Carolina, we serve @ 600 students (grades 6-8) with 15% of our population being Latin and speaking English as a Second Language. We are a very rural district with our industries being farms, factory farms and the factories that support those farms. I believe we are the third largest hog producer in the United States.
Many of our students come to us will little to no English and often little to no formal education. I am currently working with a young man, who's 14 years old and does not read Spanish or English. He speaks very little English, but understands more than he speaks.
The idea for this particular request actually came from him. His mother found a well loved and used copy at a yard sale and sent it in to school. He so badly wants to learn and tries very, very hard, but due to the agricultural nature of the family employment, and a lull in the harvesting he is having to seek work after school to help the family pay bills and have food on the table. He truly wants to be successful and learn English, and he sees that he needs to do this, as he does not wish to be dependent on the harvest as his parents are.
So as an extra support piece for out ESL teacher and all the classroom teachers we are asking for 25 copies of The Oxford Picture Dictionary in English and Spanish. This would allow each classroom to have a copy with a couple extras in the ESL room. Our Latin students have a strong desire to learn, and I have a strong desire to help them.
