Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a 9th grade Math Teacher in a public high school in the Bronx. My math students love games, puzzles, and math experiments. I would like to use this inherent enthusiasm as a way to teach probability.
Probability is a scary topic for many children. It's often too theoretical for them to grasp. The notion that there is a 1/36 chance of rolling sum of two when two dice are tossed is hard to understand unless you actually perform this experiment. This is why I'm requesting various probability supplies for our classroom. I would like to teach probability through experiments and games.
Initially, I plan on introducing probability with a range of experiments. We will begin each experiment with a prediction (ex. How many times do you expect to roll a two when a die is tossed 100 times?). And then actually be able to perform the experiment and gather actual data. From our live data, students should develop a deeper understanding of probability, including the differences between theoretical and experiment probability.
After these experiments we will move onto the fairness of games. What makes a game fair? For example, in a dice tossing game, is it fair that I get $10 for rolling an even number and you get $20 for rolling a 5? Ultimately, we will conclude the unit with a project where they design their own game and analyze the fairness of their game. They will play one another's games to test their fairness.
In order to implement these probability activities we will need classroom sets of various sided die. Thank you for your consideration!
