Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a Title I school, in a highly poverty stricken area of NYC. The students, predominantly Hispanic and Black, are burdened with more responsibilities than can be imagined, yet they come to school each day and try to learn the lessons in front of them. The students' and their parents' lives are plagued with the harsh reality of life and poverty, and many times the task of putting food on the table has to take precedence over school. This hardship can cause a lack of focus and create a stressor that makes it nearly impossible to harness the students' abilities.
My Project
Each day students will select their own books at their level for independent reading. They will focus on partner reading during parts of the Reading Block, as well. They will share the books with classmates and begin to climb higher in their levels. The topics covered in The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series are something that they can relate to and the sarcasm and wit challenges their thinking. The vocabulary is presented in such a way that they are able to use the context clues to get the meaning more so than if they were reading a passage. The fact is that they love the series and I want to encourage reading in the classroom in any way that I can.
Be the person responsible for placing the books into the hands of the students who need them the most.
Your donation will encourage them to continue reading and learning. They will know that a donor invested money into their education. By donating, you can be that person who gave them the resources to learn.
