This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are in a low social economic school with 100% of the campus receiving free breakfast and lunch. Our campus holds students from Pre-K to 5th grade.

In the beginning of the year, I struggled getting my students to read at least 2 chapters a day.

Recently, they have developed a love for reading. As their teacher, I want to keep my students interested and excited to read books. I enjoy hearing them ask me to read to them or if they can read to themselves.

My Project

During circle time, our prompt for the day was to talk about our favorite books. As we went around the classroom, I noticed that many of the students dictated that they love to read Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, mostly boys, while the girls stated they liked reading Dork Diaries.

I am planning to tap into my kids recent love for reading by providing them books that are of interest to them.

I want them to keep reading and learning while they develop sustained reading and comprehension. Most importantly, I want to keep hearing them ask me "is it time to read?"
