This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As many of you know, Michigan has been experiencing a depressed economy, which has had a direct effect on the school systems in our state. Many services have been cut and supplies are almost a thing of the past, which makes it necessary to seek funding from other sources. This request is for the entire school, which is represented by the following cultures: 58% African-American, 8% Hispanic, 16% White, 13% biracial, and 5% Asian. All of the students are considered high risk and are living well below the poverty level.
My Project
One of the initial ways I want to provide the 3rd grade students in my building the chance to develop their own abilities, is by giving them the opportunity to record their daily experiences. By providing a diary or journal for each student, I am hoping to encourage each child to start expressing their own thoughts, feelings, and ideas in a place that will not be graded, critiqued by a teacher or shared by other students. This opportunity will be afforded them by providing each student with their own "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" journal, along with 1-12 of the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series. These books will be available for each child to check out of their classroom library, thereby, serving as a model for their own writing. But equally as important, so that they can read this series just for the sheer pleasure of reading. Every day, I get at least one request for these books so I know they will be excited.
This project will give students the opportunity to read for the sheer joy of it but also to experience creating their own diary.
The goal is to also foster an interest in writing every day, and thereby develop a sense that what each individual has to say is important. By having a special book to write in, students may begin to believe they have something valuable to say, and that their life experiences can provide interesting stories.
