Diamonds are a Science Teacher's Best Friend

My Students

My students are home town outdoor kids who don't know much about their own home. We are an agricultural-based town with some migrant workers. Thirty percent of our students are Hispanic.

There is no better feeling in the world than when a student you are working with finds self-confidence and self-worth.

Learning is more meaningful when you can put an object in your hands. I hope to accomplish both of these goals in the teaching of minerals and gems..

My Project

We like to use minerals in teaching physical properties in Chemistry and Physical Science. This is an awesome way to use some cross curricular material to teach. Gems are very useful in teaching about the hardness scale. Corundum, diamonds, garnets, topaz, and others are key check points on Moh's Hardness scale.

Using Geology to teach Chemistry is a technique to apply multiple disciplines to teach specific skills.

Using these mineral samples we can apply physical properties of matter to learn about the structures of molecules and why they have the properties that they do.
