Developmentally Appropriate Distance Learning? Hands-on Experiences Are Essential!
Help me give my students personal bins of hands-on educational materials, including individual sets of magnetic letters and numerals and of pattern blocks, that will enable them actively to engage in learning while remaining as safe as possible!
I teach a racially and ethnically diverse group of students. I don't yet know the exact make-up of this year's class, but typically a quarter of us are immigrants, some of whose families will have entered the United States as refugees, and we include Black, Asian, white, and multi-racial children from a variety of cultural, linguistic, and religious backgrounds. Usually some of us have identified special needs, and, as income is considered in admissions decisions, all of my students live in low-income households.
Each year my students begin school full of energy and enthusiasm; however, because COVID has forced us to begin this year online, their usual excitement has been tempered by apprehension.
I've spent much of the summer learning about ways to engage all my students in the unfamiliar environment of virtual learning and recognize that I'll have to continue to work especially hard and strategically to connect with students I can't touch and can see, with brief, socially distanced exceptions, only on a screen.
My Project
Preschoolers learn by doing! These materials will form the foundation of a personal distance-learning kit to enable each of the 16 students in my class to do just that while remaining as safe as possible during the current pandemic. I'll deliver the kits--along with crayons, markers, and large pencils--in September and will supplement them with a variety of purchased and teacher-made materials at least monthly.
Each day, children will bring their learning kits to our virtual classroom, where they'll use engaging hands-on materials to explore such concepts as color, shape, and pattern and to practice essential skills including writing, sorting, counting, set-making, and letter and numeral identification.
With your help, we can equip our students to enter fully and confidently, as active learners, the challenging new landscape of distance learning.
