Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our class of 25 Kindergartners is always filled with joy and love. The joy of being together after two years of the pandemic and love for one another, and for learning new things each day! For many of my students, this is their very first experience setting foot inside a school building and adjusting to what it means, looks like, and feels like to go to school. With that, come many challenges such as how to color inside the lines, how to hold a pencil properly, and how to share with friends. In addition to those challenges come many rewarding Aha moments which lay the foundation for academic, social, and emotional success that will carry them from Kindergarten and beyond.
It's amazing to watch the transformation of my students-they go from timid babies crying on the first day of school to proud, independent readers and writers.
My Project
Most of my Kinder students have come to school with little to no experience with using writing tools such as crayons, pencils, and markers. Our crayons are constantly broken and they struggle to print their first names.
Pencil grip is a great challenge for many; providing tools that will support their fine motor skills is essential to their learning.
Along with asking for small, thick pencils, incorporating dry erase markers, whiteboards and magnetic doodle boards will catapult them into being curious explorers who can become passionate and confident writers.
