My Students

Most of our students are subjected to poverty and violence. These are just two of the daily challenges facing our leaders of tomorrow. I remember how eager I was to write my own stories and how my teacher encouraged me! I am compelled to do the same for them.

Our school is located in an extremely high crime area.

For many of our students the only place for routine and consistency is school. Unfortunately, the sound of gunshots is not an unfamiliar sound for our young ones to hear. Written expression can be an enormous tool for making sense of a senseless environment.

My Project

The written word is powerful! The ability to put pen to paper, or rather "marker to lapboard" expressing what is in the children's minds and hearts will better prepare them for a successful academic and prosperous life experience. It is my firm belief reading and writing are skills needed to change destiny! My students need whiteboards, markers, and erasers to build their writing skills.

As our less privileged population continues to fall short on standardized assessments, building strong writing skills in the lower grades will be supportive in bridging the academic gap.
