Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It is imperative that my students develop writing skills as a means of academic and social communication. Many of my students have difficulty with writing due to fine motor skills and it is a daily challenge for them to write using traditional writing tools.
My elementary school students are in a special day class and have moderate to severe disabilities.
Many of my students are non-verbal, but are excellent with computers. The students are eager to express themselves, interact with their peers, and share what they are learning with their family members in printed form. With a printer in our classroom they would also have access to visual aids, which are an integral part of building their working vocabulary.
My Project
By providing students with the opportunity to type, print their work, and communicate through print we are preparing them for the ultimate goal of integrating them into projects with typical students. The students attend a low income school and come from socioeconomically disadvantaged homes. Our students learn using various modalities. Of all the assistive technology I implemented with my students, this is by far the most effective way of helping them achieve the communication skills typical of students their age. My students need a printer.
Due to the limited funds available, I have not been able to acquire this resource for my students.
I would love for my students to experience writing, researching, and learning. A printer in our classroom would have a positive impact on our students daily writing tasks. Please help us develop writing skills with students who eagerly want to develop a voice!
