A community of active, engaged, and respectful learners: I have heard my principal use these words to describe what he observed when visiting my classroom. My class is made up of diverse and excited Kindergarten kids who love to move while they are learning.
My school is very diverse.
We have students and families from all over the world. Nearly 35% of my students are from homes where English is not the language spoken by their family. The majority of these children are from families who were refugees in Africa. I teach at a public elementary school in Iowa. Nearly 80% of the student body at my school qualify for the federal free and reduced-price lunch program. Roughly 40% of the student body at my school qualify for our ELL program. My school has the highest percentage of minority students at the elementary level in the district. Our families are from more than 24 different countries from around the world.
Using rich text and hands-on materials is a great way for children to develop their oral language and comprehension skills. The big books and story retelling kits will be utilized for whole and small group interactive reading lessons. My students will also have the opportunity to retell these stories using the kits during their independent and partner work time.
The students in my classroom who are English language learners or have delayed language acquisition skills will especially benefit from these materials.
My students will have the opportunity to use engaging stories to learn vocabulary words and retell key events and describe characters. My students will also be able to use the center materials to develop a deeper understanding of key concepts and vocabulary words by completing activities that require comparing and contrasting items.
