Developing Social-Emotional Skills Through Biblio-Therapy Part 8
Help me give my students books like Two Monsters and Me - Everybody gets Angry, The Memory Box: A Book About Grief, and After the Fall (How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again)
As a school counselor, I have the privilege of working with students to assist with their academic and social/emotional needs. I have the unique opportunity to work with all of the students and to be able to focus not only on their school work, but also help with challenges the students face with their home situation.
We are a Title I school with 37.4% of our students identified as economically disadvantaged.
I see all students in grades 4K-5 for classroom guidance lessons and additionally many of them for small group or individual counseling services. I also assist students in obtaining their basic needs and connecting families to community resources.
My Project
I am requesting social-emotional books that I can use in several ways to benefit my students. These books will be used during classroom guidance lessons, small groups, and individual counseling to reinforce skills or work through challenging topics. Books are a helpful tool to assist my students while working through challenges or life changes. They are also important while learning new social-emotional skills. Books allow children to relate to certain aspects of their life that may be difficult to discuss otherwise. Books help my students by normalizing behaviors and feelings and offering hope in difficult situations.
I believe that this project will help my students because it will allow them to read and listen to books that are specific to the lessons about social emotional skills that we are learning.
The books will allow students to be engaged in the topic and come up with solutions to the challenges presented to them in a safe manner, as they relate to the characters and not to themselves. These books will also help my special education students learn skills during our social skills small group instruction.
