Help me give my students decodable books to develop strong reading skills based on their range of levels, from students still learning letters and sounds to students who can decode but need access to lots of leveled text.
As a teacher at a Title I school, with a high-poverty population, I teach students who come to me each day with a variety of needs to be met. Many of these needs have nothing to do with classroom education. My students are primarily English Language learners. Some are homeless, have temporary living situations that could change any time of day or night, or are living in a tiny apartment with multiple families. Many are not sure where they will eat until they come back to school again. School is their safe place.
My students know that if they can get to the bus, they will come to a secure place where they will get breakfast, lunch, and as many hugs as they need.
If they need shoes or clothes or school supplies, they know that our school will try to find some for them.
My goal each day is to inspire these students with knowledge of the world around them, develop productive citizens with a growth mindset, build strong readers, facilitate a love of reading, and help them on their journey to becoming the amazing adults I know they can be!
My Project
These materials will make a significant difference in the literacy learning of my students. My students have many obstacles to learning, and I do not want a lack of access to personalized text to be one of them.
With these decodable reading materials, I can provide more reading experiences that target my students' exact needs to fast-track their success in reading.
The Science of Reading shows that students need decodable text to practice applying the phonics skills they are learning in class.
Also, one of the items I am requesting is called "Secret Stories." My students struggle with having the sufficient working memory required to retain information, one of the many challenges they face when learning to read. This resource increases automaticity in early reading skills through musical manipulation and memorable stories about why sounds and letter representations of those sounds follow the patterns they do.
