Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a first grade teacher at Edison Brentwood Academy in East Palo Alto, CA. Of the almost 500 students at our K-3 elementary school, most qualify for free lunch. Learning to read is an enormous task for all students in first grade, and approximately 90% of the students at my school have the even more difficult task of learning to read in their second language. These students need more help with English language development and reading fluency to be able to succeed and become readers. All students benefit from hearing good reading as they read on their own and students who are English language learners gain even more from this type of activity. Through Leap Pad Learing Systems, students use a pointer to hear words aloud as they read books. The Leap Pad center combines reading, English language development, and fun. Earlier this summer I received 6 Leap Pad Learning Systems and I look forward to bringing these learning tools to life. Having a variety of Leap Pad books for students to choose from will help them enjoy learning to read and engage them in reading. Our school already has a few Leap Pad books and I had four books donated from Leap Frog last year. I look forward to even more books to bring the Leap Pad center up to its potential for students. With a variety of books, students will be excited each day to read new books and continue to enjoy learning to read. The list of books I am ordering from Barnes and Noble will accomplish this goal and continue to provide material for my students that they love reading. I\'m excited to see my students\' potential come to life this year with all the right tools. Thank you so much for your help in creating readers and providing wonderful resources for my students.
