Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
'Why is the sky blue?" First grade is the age of wonder, energy, curiosity, silliness, and enthusiasm. Non-fiction magazines open the doors to understanding the world. Photographs and diagrams are less intimidating to struggling readers. They are also tools to teach kids to be critical thinkers.
My students are part of a large urban elementary school.
Many diverse cultures are represented in our school. English is not the first language for over 80% of our students which makes the graphics and other visual aides of magazines even more important as they learn to read. Over 75% of our school qualifies from free and reduced lunch. My students come to school eager to learn even though many face challenges at home. Many of my families have limited or no access to reading materials at home. Families want to help their children succeed, but are sometimes unsure of how to help their children learn to read. Magazine subscriptions will provide my students with a steady and ongoing source of new and exciting text that is accessible and engaging.
My Project
Individual subscriptions to Time for Kids will expose my students to a variety of genres. They will learn about non-fiction features. The magazines will actively engage them in learning about different parts of the world. Not only will they broaden their horizons in class but they will be able to build a library at home. Family and friends will also benefit from my students sharing their new learning. Whisper Phones will help students verbally process their curiosity and learning with less chaos. Whisper Phones are ideal for helping young learners develop their reading abilities and for developing new language skills.
My 25 students need individual subscriptions to Time for Kids to broaden their horizons.
This tool will be accessible to a wide range of readers and enhance them and their families.
