Developing Passionate, Informed Readers with Graphic Novels!

My Students

A typical student from my classroom enters in the morning with a bright smile on her face and big pile of books in her hands. I have striven to develop a classroom of passionate readers, and my last project has helped make that a reality. I need more engaging graphic novels to help fuel this fire!

I have the most wonderful 4th grade students!

They are curious, passionate, insightful, gutsy, and hilarious! Their enthusiasm for life and learning inspires me every day. Many of them are newly obsessed with reading, especially graphic novels. They are constantly keeping me up-to-date with the books that they have read. Most of my students qualify for free and reduced price lunch. They come from a wide range of rich cultural and ethnic backgrounds and experiences. About a third of my school's students are Hispanic, a third African American, and a third Caucasian.

My Project

My students have fallen in love with reading since we received our first batch of graphic novels from generous donors. Over the last few months, students have read furiously. Many of my students have already read all of the graphic novels we received earlier in the school year, and every day, they request more. Our school has few graphic novels available in the library, and many students cannot afford to purchase these texts, so their primary source of access is our classroom library. In addition to reading these new graphic novels, we will use the texts for critical analysis in our reading response journals. Students will consider questions such as: How do the graphics and text work together to tell the story? Why did the author place the panels as he/she did? I also plan on using several of these texts (e.g. A Year Without Mom, Bluffton, etc.) in various content areas and in our upcoming PYP (Primary Years Programme) units of inquiry, such as our unit of inquiry on immigration, which is in the spring.

These texts will enhance instruction across content areas.

My students are naturally excited by graphic novels, and several of these texts (e.g. Prison Island, Relish, Primates, etc.) are true works of art that provide unique perspectives and fabulous writing. These books will further the passion for reading that was sparked in so many students when we received our first donation. With this project, students will continue to fall in love with reading and buzz about books with classmates.
