Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Because Transitional Kindergarten is new in our district, my students do not have all of the necessary materials to support their learning in a developmentally appropriate way. Despite this, I am very excited to work with my young students and to provide them with a nurturing environment to support their learning.
My students are energetic, curious, and excited about the world around them.
They come to school ready and excited to learn. They are like little sponges, absorbing everything they are exposed to, and always ready for more. For most of them, this is their first formal school experience.
My Project
In Transitional Kindergarten, one of the most important skills that children learn is numeracy skills. Through Number Sense, students learn important math skills such as Number Recognition, Rote Counting, Counting with One to One Correspondence, Addition, Composing and Decomposing Numbers, and Number Relationships. All of these skills provide a strong foundation for later overall success in math.
Naming numbers and counting has been at the core of early mathematics, however, through developmentally appropriate learning opportunities, children can develop a deeper understanding of number sense.
During centers, these materials will allow me to provide students with opportunities to explore number sense through hands on activities. Through hands on exploration, they will have an opportunity to develop a true number sense that goes beyond number recognition. The materials that I am requesting will enable me to provide students with opportunities to explore numeracy skills through developmentally appropriate activities, as well as develop an understanding of their learning. They will be able to make discoveries and connections that will help them succeed in math, throughout their lives.
