My students are 5 and 6 years of age and come from a rural/suburban area in the midwest. They are bright, curious, and very energetic. They love to do new things, see new things, and try new things. They enjoy building things and exploring new ways to use their imaginations.
They are full of enthusiasm and eager to learn through play and hands-on experiences.
They love building and using their imaginations to create things with both technology and hands-on activities.
My Project
Many of my students are having a difficult time holding a pencil, cutting with scissors, or even using a glue stick throughout our kindergarten day. Although we do these things each day, it is very clear that their fine motor muscles are simply underdeveloped and need a workout. Many of the students do not enjoy cutting and coloring and are not always excited about extra practice with these activities. These items will provide a variety of ways for my students to develop the fine motor muscles necessary for these life skills.
Kindergartners engage and are more excited about learning when doing so through play.
When building with these construction sets, my students will not only be playing, but helping to build their fine motor muscles. They will be using their fingers to screw together nuts and bolts, pushing slot pieces together, building gears that they will be able to turn with their fingers, or manipulating Alpha-bots into various letters during reading and math lessons, as well as free choice time each day. When following directions to create new things, they will be using their little hands and fingers to manipulate small pieces in various ways, all the while helping to build the fine motor muscles in their hands without continual use of pencils and scissors.
