Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It is time to take back reading!! These days we read for skill development more than pleasure. There is so much emphasis on non-fiction, but children still need to read great stories and learn from them. The lessons we learn from emotionally touching literature can stay with us for a lifetime.
Our students come from a diverse, suburban neighborhood.
By growing up together, our children have learned about the beauty and value of honoring our differences while recognizing the things we share in common. We enjoy teaching children from many cultural and religious backgrounds. Our students are communicative and love expressing themselves. They are talented, special and unique kids.
My Project
We want to bring back the joy of reading in our classrooms. All of the emphasis on Common Core standards and standardized testing are making some of us lose our way. Learning should be fun and meaningful. Literature is an important way of teaching and modeling the values that we want to instill in our students. The book Wonder by R.J. Palacio encourages kindness and understanding and that is why we have chosen it for our students to read and enjoy.
Having a class set of the novel Wonder will allow us years of pleasure reading with our students.
It will change lives because it is a touching story of acceptance and kindness and if just one child in the class learns to be a kinder person, this will have a lasting effect on the people he or she interacts with in the future. Our classroom, our school and our community can all benefit when we encourage kindness and love in our children.
