Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 5th and 6th graders at an urban school in Compton where I am the curriculum specialist during the day. My students (Latinos and African-Americans) are historically underrepresented in the STEM fields. My hope is to change that by exposing my students to different STEM programs.
I see an opportunity to build something at this school that has never existed before.
I want to give students a new opportunity through STEM programs like First Lego League. Careers in STEM are growing quickly, and my hope is that I can build their interest in math, science, and engineering through fun, hands-on activities like First Lego League.
My Project
Our robotics team is new this year and the students are eager to get started so we are full STEAM ahead. We need additional Lego motors, a sensor, and expansion sets to be able to compete in the competition. We have two dedicated teachers and a strong core FLL team.
We have a vision for where we want to take our robotics team and get our students excited about math, science, and engineering.
We want to represent the school and district proudly at regional competitions, and we want our future engineers to have bright futures in STEM fields. This team can be a catalyst for all of those hopes and dreams.
