As a teacher to twenty second graders in a high needs, under-resourced South Bronx elementary school, it is a challenge for me to teach my students to embrace reading and writing. My students are generally low functioning readers and writers. They do not possess the same skills as many other second grade readers and writers. Many of my students are still struggling with basic sight words and phonemic sounds. I use text on chart tablets and pocket charts, in addition to books and poems, to help my students become better readers. These texts are read and reread by my students everyday. One of my greatest challenges is the lack of resources that are available for me to create an effective literacy center for my classroom. I have some books in my classroom, but I still need an easel and storage space to properly display poems, big books, songs, and charts. I also need a place to store student portfolios, guided reading materials, magnetic letters, markers, and journals. Currently, the only furniture in my classroom is very old, wooden desks and chairs, broken shelves. This single resource, a chart caddy center, is designed to encourage my students to become better readers and writers. It will maximize the space in my classroom by enhancing the presentation of poems, charts, big books, and songs. My students will have easier access to the materials they need. The texts on the chart tablets and in the pocket charts will be ever-visible to my students. The chart caddy center will help to promote reading and while providing them with a print rich environment. My students will finally have a space with organized literacy materials such as big and small books, chart paper, pocket charts, pencils, markers, a magnetic dry erase board, magnetic letters, and paper. This Chart Caddy will facilitate reading and writing and at the same time assist the students in developing a love for reading and writing. This will lead to future success in school. Thank you for considering my request.
