Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from culturally and economically diverse backgrounds, as our city is a gateway community in this global world. They know that our school is not only where they go to learn, but also a second home where they will be encouraged, engaged, and enabled to be the best version of themselves. Their families work hard to provide opportunities despite various challenges. More often than not, they have very little and do not ask for much. They are eager for and appreciative of the educational and extracurricular opportunities available to them. Many of my students do not have access to reading materials whether it's due to language barriers or budgetary limits. Nearly half of our population is economically disadvantaged and 66% do not speak English as their first language.
My Project
Storytelling is a universal human activity, and biographies are organized in a way that students can naturally follow. In turn, they are able to devote more attention to its content and language.
The level 1 and 2 English language learner population need access to quality texts that will engage and develop them into independent readers in their newly acquired language.
Their knowledge and skills could be monumentally improved with the addition of these titles that will be used for independent reading assignments completed throughout the remainder of the school year. Our grade 7 EL population will now be able to join in with their peers in completing the grade-level wide quarterly activity that is already making changes in their reading habits. These texts will also provide additional opportunities for students to learn about important historical figures from throughout US history.
