My Students

Our Green Team is dedicated to helping make our world a better place. The team is comprised of 4th and 5th grade students who show a passion for the environment and want to make a difference. They apply to become a member of the Green Team.

They become environmental stewards and teach the rest of the school community how to take care of the environment.

Brooklyn is home to such a diverse group of people. Much like the people in our borough, it is also home to a diverse wildlife population. Our Green Team wants to observe all the wildlife that visits our garden as well as explore our neighborhood and different nature areas to see wildlife up close.

My Project

My Green Team loves to work in our garden to make it a better place for all the neighborhood visitors to enjoy. The neighborhood visitors are birds, squirrels, opossums, bugs, butterflies, and bees. Our community garden is home to all of these animals. My team is developing empathy for all living things in our ecosystem. They have learned that no matter where you are, nature is all around you. It is our job to take care of it.

Nature is not something to take for granted.

We have to love and protect it. My team is learning how to make a difference through action. The garden is a perfect example of how to take care of nature. If we have binoculars, we will be able to see the visitors up close. The binoculars will help them with their observation and inquiry skills. By seeing these animals up close, it fosters inquisitive minds to develop questions to be discussed. Seeing a pigeon or sparrow up close brings out their natural beauty that is sometimes lost when looking from a distance. Seeing these birds up close creates a bond and the children become their protectors and want to take care of them. We will also use the binoculars for our school trips to local nature centers in Brooklyn and Staten Island, where they have an opportunity to see animals such as deer, chipmunks, seals and maybe even a bald eagle! Kids from Brooklyn getting to see these animals in a natural setting is priceless and the experience will last a lifetime. These binoculars have the power to transform my students into lifelong defenders of nature which is what we need in our society.
