Help me give my students access to engaging books that give them an opportunity to see themselves through the characters. These books address different experiences, cultures, and problems the characters face and students can learn from.
I work with sixth grade students who are transitioning to a new school and a new stage of their life. They come in as quiet and tentative students and blossom throughout the year into independent learners that find a place for themselves in their new community at the middle school.
My students are learning about themselves as developing adolescents just as much as they are learning about academics.
They are making new friendships and finding what they are passionate about. They are naturally curious and enjoy learning when it is purposeful and meaningful to them. They thrive when they are given a chance to understand a new perspective or are included in more mature discussions. They inspire me daily to make my classroom safe, educational, and purposeful for their development.
My Project
The books for this project will help to engage my students in reading and help them to develop into lifelong readers and learners. The books for this project help students be able to connect with characters and the struggles they face. Students are given the opportunity to also learn about different experiences and cultures through the diverse selection of books. The books were selected purposefully to address different social emotional troubles teens face, but also to make sure the settings of the book span across the globe. There is something for all students in this list. The selected books make sure to address all sub genres for fiction to make sure that all students are able to find a type of book they are interested in.
Through literature, students will be able to develop skills to help them be a good citizen in their community.
They will develop comprehension skills through their reading, but also learn about ways to handle difficult situations they may encounter in their life. This project will help all students develop reading comprehension skills that will transfer into comprehending reading in other areas of school. They will gain confidence in themselves through reading and learn about acceptance of others. This project will benefit students both academically, socially, and emotionally.
