The student population I work with on a daily basis are students who come from a high poverty background. In our local community, 75% of families fall below the poverty line. Most of our students are also minority students.
Our students need access to the same resources that other students who do not come from the same background have access to.
By giving them access to better resources, it will allow them to be more successful academically, increase self-esteem, and allow them to enjoy school so that they will want to show up.
My Project
Writing is an important skill and can be a difficult subject to grasp. I want to use these resources to help develop the skills necessary to become good writers.
Mentor texts are great tools to help develop writing skills.
The texts I have chosen go hand in hand with a writing unit that helps students to develop their writing skills. These mentor text will be helpful in developing beginnings (Crickwig) and conclusions (Miss Smith's Incredible Storybook), help with proper punctuation (Twenty Odd Ducks:Why Every Punctuation Mark Counts), and develop characters (The Recess Queen) and settings (Tuesday). Each of the books chosen helps to develop specific skills by giving students strong examples from published authors.
