My Students

My students are bright and inquisitive, eager to learn about the world around them. Many come from all over the world, speaking different languages at home including Spanish, Vietnamese, Hindu, Urdu, Yoruba, and Arabic. My district is designated Title 1; with over 80% of the students at my school receive free and reduced price lunch.

Yet, despite many challenges, my students are an inspiration.

They take their school work very seriously and do their best everyday. They work well with each other and treat each other with respect. We have become an instant family this year. I feel honored to lead them in their reading and writing learning. No doubt, one day they will be leading me...and all of us.

My Project

When we think back to our fondest grade school memories, many of us recall an engrossing teacher read-aloud of a classic book that took our imagination to another world! I remember mine; it was Mr. Spangler’s engaging and charismatic read of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

This year, my students will embark on a similar journey where, through a comprehensive read-aloud curriculum, they will shift from merely reading the words on a page to becoming actively thinking readers.

Many of my fourth grade students enter my classroom as reluctant readers. Most of them have never experienced the deep satisfaction of reading a piece of literature from beginning to end. This requires stamina, commitment and the development of higher-order comprehension skills they have yet to acquire. On basic terms, they need to be taught how to read a chapter book through modeling, instruction and, most importantly, having a book in-hand.

For both my whole group and small group instruction, each of my students will have a copy of a chapter book and, as I read to them, they will read along. This structure – what I call the “cooperative read-aloud” – allows for me to model how to be an active and purposeful reader. In doing so, my students will learn how to directly apply comprehension strategies, reading skills and expand their vocabulary. Through these meaningful reading experiences, my students will develop the ability to justify their responses with text evidence. In all, these higher order thinking skills will pay dividends throughout their academic career.
