My students need the opportunity to read engaging, age-appropriate articles about current events and historical events. Junior Scholastic Magazine gives students the opportunity to become informed citizens through their articles and activities.
The students that I work with come from a wide variety of backgrounds. I have students that were born in other communities and countries before coming to the United States, as well as students that have lived in our community their whole lives. My building has 41% of the students qualifying for free and/or reduced lunch. 28% of the students are identified as minority students.
All of my students are eager to learn and grow this year, as we read, write, and use discussion to study our country's early history and learn about civics.
The students have a wide range of learning needs. I teach students that range in reading skills from 1st through post high school.
My students love to interact with each other in many different types of groupings. Some projects lend themselves to working in groups of four, while others lend themselves better to working in partners or alone. The students in my room come from many types of cultures.
My Project
Junior Scholastic Magazine has several types of articles that will meet my students' needs. Each month, Junior Scholastic highlights national and international articles. They also include articles that focus on history and debatable questions. Along with the basic magazine, a teacher's guide provides choices for activities to use with the magazine.
The engaging articles in Junior Scholastic will give my students an opportunity to practice being active, informed citizens.
They will respond to the content in the articles through discussion and critical writing responses. Finally, the articles will provide a foundation for the students to develop arguments based in evidence.
