This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you remember a time when you tried to make sense of some type of document, for example health insurance forms or tax forms? My students are in need of developing their academic literacy so they can access scientific literature and informational texts.
My students reside in a tiny rural farming community in California.
Language abilities vary depending on each student's background, but for many of them English is their second language. My students are sweet, energetic, proactive learners, that work with limited resources and access. Most students come from a low socioeconomic background and are sadly use to limited resources. However, these disadvantages seem to fuel their drive to learn, so they can better their lives and perhaps their family's. The school community is rich in culture, and is attempting to provide the best education for the students in our rural community. Our school is embracing the Common Core Standards so that we can better prepare our students for the demands of the 21st century. My colleagues and I have identified that reading, writing, and analytical skills are low amongst our students.
My Project
As a science teacher, I have the privilege of teaching my students reading and writing conventions in the realm of science. I am asking for a document camera so that I can model how to read through expository texts and scientific papers; and, extrapolate, analyze, and interpret the information within the text with various reading comprehension strategies. If I can increase students' reading comprehension, then I can give them better access to course content and informational texts. I also would like to model how to write-up lab reports. Currently, I model how to write-up lab reports, but I am often stuck to an overhead projector or the whiteboard while I am modeling. The document camera I am asking for has a tablet that I can walk around the classroom with; this can allow me to model writing skills while assisting students around the room, and allow them to add their input by writing on the tablet as well. Additionally, I intend to model note-taking skills, and much more.
In addition to teaching science, I want to teach my students skills that can be applied to any career or educational goal that they have in mind.
I want to model literacy and analytical strategies, so that they can be more aware as they continue to grow and learn in the 21st century. By funding my project you will be helping my students improve their literacy and analytical skills which can improve their access to informational texts and better prepare them for demands in their pursuits.
